Vitreous enamels have been applied to jewellery and decorative items from the days of the ancient Egyptians and Greeks. Tutankhamun’s mask incorporates enamels of this kind. The enamels are made by fusing glass and various elements in a process to form sheets of coloured glass. These sheets are then broken down and finely ground by hand using a pestle and mortar until it is almost a fine sand texture. This is then mixed in water with gum Arabic and laid into the pieces to be enamelled using fine brushes or old fashioned pen nibs. The water is removed by drying prior to firing at temperatures between 600 and 850 degrees Celsius to turn the powdered glass back into a sheet again. Once fired the glass is filed back by hand to reveal the design (tommy) through the enamel. It is then re-fired to put the shine back to the surface and then finally polished to a high lustre removing any further fine blemishes.
They're an excellent feature piece or gift to any partner, friend or family member particularly with a military connection, coming well-presented in a cushioned box.
